Suspected Shooter Of East St. Louis Police Officer In Custody
The person suspected of shooting an East St. Louis police officer is in custody. The man was arrested late Sunday . Meanwhile, the officer who was shot, Michael Baxton, Jr. remains at SLU Hospital.
Baxton, 26, was shot in the face Sunday afternoon while trying to arrest a fugitive. The bullet went into the left side of his jaw and out his cheek. East St. Louis police say he is recovering well and there is a chance he could be released later Monday.
A suspect was arrested after an intense search that started shortly after the shooting around 3:00pm Sunday afternoon. Investigators say the man was taken into custody at 11:20pm in an apartment at the Rukavina Building on Waverly in East St. Louis. U.S. Marshal`s and Illinois State Police made the arrest.
Police say Baxton was trying to take the man into custody while he was walking on the street near the Orr Weathers housing complex. That`s when the suspect allegedly shot him. The suspect had a history of gun and drug charges and had failed to report to a halfway house.
Baxton is the son of former East St. Louis Police Chief Michael Baxton, Sr. Baxton, Sr. pleaded guilty in January to felony charges of stealing X-Box game systems from a car he thought was stolen then lying about it to federal agents.
