Oakland, CA (CNN) - This could be a blockbuster weekend for "The Hunger Games." Fans lined up in early Thursday in Oakland, California to be one of the first to see the movie which opened at select theaters at midnight.
The film takes place in a futuristic society where kids are forced to battle other kids to their death.
It stars Jennifer Lawrence as 16-year-old Katniss Everdeen who volunteers to take her younger sister's place in the games.
The movie is based on the first in a trilogy of books written by Suzanne Collins.
