ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI)-- Three young men from the Metro East rushed to help St. Louis City police catch a suspect wanted for driving off after slamming into a tow truck driver and killing him.
J.D. Garret, Cory Beyer and Justin Shafer witnessed the hit and run. Garrett said, "It was horrible, the first thing I did was start praying." Beyer added,"'I`ve never seen anything like that before." And Schafer said, "I was screaming like, 'No, this isn`t happening.'"
David Bense Sr., 51, was the victim. It happened Monday night on Interstate 70. Bense was nearing the end of his shift as a AAA tow truck driver.
Cory Beyer was stunned by what he saw, "The next thing I know the car was just taking off, so I said, 'No, that`s not happening.' So I chased him." He also called police telling them where the suspect was going. Shafer said, "I just don`t want the guy to get away."
Within minutes, police caught the suspect, Aaron Bouge, 21, of Imperial. He`s charged with leaving the scene of an injury accident and could face additional charges.
Beyer felt good about what he did, "I felt like it was the right thing to do."
Police say they appreciate the public`s help in solving crimes, but they also advise citizens not to put themselves at risk.
