ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI)— An Amber alert has been issued after a 5-year-old boy was taken by his father from Children’s Hospital.

Authorities said Porter Stone was taken from the hospital by his father around 4 p.m. without permission from the mother, who has custody of the child.

The child was discharged from the hospital to his mom and dad. The boy`s uncle said the boy`s father told family members that he was taking Porter to the pharmacy when the two left.

The chief medical officer from St. Louis Children`s Hospital said the boy`s father was well aware that the boy needs a certain type of medicine to treat a heart condition known as cardiomyopathy.  It`s a weakening of the heart muscle that prevents it from pumping correctly.

Family members have concerns saying the father was acting irrationally at the hospital.  Police say the child`s mother and father are in the process of a divorce.

"The father has no instructions on how to change or use the pump and he has no meds with him currently," said Ian Fife, Porter Stone`s uncle.

Porter is 46” tall, weighs 44lbs and was last seen wearing a grey t-shirt, black and white plaid shorts and spider man tennis shoes. Porter is caring a back pack which contains medical equipment.

The father is Jeffrey Stone, a 33-year old white male, He is 6’6” tail, weighs 23O lbs, with a shaved head and was last seen wearing a grey shirt, black shorts and a San Francisco Giants baseball cap. He is also carrying a Nike back pack.

They were seen leaving the hospital in a Silver 4-door Toyota Corolla with California license plates.

St. Louis Metropolitan Police captain James Moran has concerns because he`s been told Jeffrey Stone has a violent past.  Moran said he`s been unable to confirm those reports.

"Someone who is willing to take his child who is on the heart transplant list and take him away from what was good medical care and disappear with him, there`s something terribly wrong," said Moran.

He said police searched the airport and other modes of transportation looking for the boy.  Moran said the father faces charges related to a parental abduction.  He said family members showed police court papers from Texas that give the boy`s mother legal custody.
