SANFORD, FL. (CNN) - The Police Chief of Sanford, Florida wanted to resign, but the city commission said they wouldn't accept the resignation.  Chief Bill Lee has been criticized for his handling of the Trayvon Martin shooting case.

Lee had stepped down temporarily in March after being accused of not initially charging George Zimmerman.  The neighborhood watchman now faces a second degree murder charge after claiming self defense.

Lee says he initially stepped down temporarily because he wanted to let tensions cool.

Sanford city commissioners blamed the uproar surrounding Martin's death on outsiders.
