ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI)-- The wife of Stan "The Man" Musial, Lillian Musial, died Thursday night. Mrs. Musial, 91, had been ill for some time and was last seen publicly when Stan received his Presidential Medal of Freedom award. No official cause of death has been released.

The Musials were high school sweethearts. Stan and "Lil" were married in May of 1940, so they were married nearly 72 years.

Stan's grandson, Brian Musial Schwarze, issued a family statement shortly afterward saying, "Stan and the family were by her side. We will all miss her dearly." The family released this statement on Twitter:

"Lil Musial, wife to Stan for 73 years, passed this evening at 6 pm. Stan and the family were by her side. We will all miss her dearly."

The Cardinals released this statement:

“We have lost a valued member of the Cardinals family,” Cardinals Chairman Bill DeWitt Jr. said.   “Lil was the love of Stan’s life - - a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.  She was a remarkable woman who touched the lives of so many people.  From her selfless work in organizing the Cardinals Pinch Hitters group to her more recent efforts to help homeless, runaway girls with the Covenant House, Lil was always helping others.   The entire Cardinals organization extends its sincere condolences to Stan, their children Richard, Gerry, Janet and Jean, and their eleven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.”
