Thousands Of Teens Attend Rally Against Unprotected Sex

ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI)– Better Family Life hosted a rally against unprotected sex for middle and high-school students at the University of Missouri in St. Louis Friday.

Miya Grimes, 21, is HIV-positive.

“I was diagnosed at the age of 18,” she remembered.  “He was my first.”

Miya was in what she thought was a committed relationship for only 6 months.

“It was anger, it was upset, it was hurt it was confusion,” she said.

Now, she`s talking. She joined a Friday morning rally at the University Of Missouri – St. Louis.  There was a battle of the bands, Hip-hop, singing and circus performances.  Between each act, came a cold and hard dose of reality to any of the thousands of middle and high school students thinking about unprotected sex.

“I was pregnant by the time I was 16 years old,” recalled one of the speakers.  “I was a full-time college student, as well.  That shows you smart girls get pregnant too, not just the dumb ones.”

A lot of the speakers on the stage are young women.  But, a lot of the young men in the audience say they are learning some tough lessons too.

“The speech that I heard,” said Vashon junior Travion McCorvey.  ‘It showed me that anything can happen to anybody.  Not just bad people, good people, everything.”

Hip-hop activist Yung Ro said teens have a “fast-food, drive-thru” attitude toward romance.

“A good relationship comes from hard work and practice.  So, one night of pleasure can definitely change your life,” he said. “You never know where your life could have ended up, if you had just slowed it down. You know?”

Grimes said she is speaking out because unprotected sex can bring disease and poverty.

“Take responsibility for your actions,” she begged teens.  “Because at the end of the day, it’s just you and this other person.  You can only protect yourself.”
