FOREST PARK (KTVI)-Hundreds leashed up their dogs and headed to Forest Park Saturday morning for the annual Bark in the Park festival. The event, put on by the Humane Society of Missouri, featured the Walk for Animals, a fundraiser for its Animal Cruelty Fund. There were also activities for adults, kids, and dogs until 3:00pm.
FOX2/News 11`s Randi Naughton, Melanie Moon, and Angie Mock led the walk.
Saturday was a warm and muggy May day. It gave Humane Society President Kathy Warnick a chance to give an important hot weather reminder.
“Never, ever leave their animal in the car when the temperature is 70 degrees or higher,” she warned. “It is illegal and it can be lethal for the animal.”
Warnick spent the day pointing out that the spring is now bringing summer-like sun. She urged owners to make sure shade is always available to pets.
“Just because it’s in the shade when you leave in the morning,” she explained, “doesn’t mean it’s going to be in the shade when you come home in the afternoon.”
Warnick said humans don’t understand that pets are more like babies. They need humans to make good decisions all the time to keep them safe.
“I think that people think that they are going to be gone for just a moment or two and then they are gone for much longer.”
Terry Noffsinger owns Serin.
“I already have the air conditioner on at the house,”’ he said.
Serin is a huge, 5-year-old, Irish Wolfhound. Her owner is constantly watching her for heat exhaustion when they spend time outside.
“Main thing is just watching if they’re panting a lot,” he said. “And always have water. We walk in parks where they have spigots. If she sees a lake, she will climb it.”
Noffsinger’s kids are grown. He thought. He laughed when told he might look after Serin as if she is his baby.
“She is part of my family,” he admitted. “Very much so. I think anybody who has an animal should treat them just like one of their kids. They don’t deserve nothin’ less.”
