EDWARDSVILLE, IL (KTVI) - A Wood River man accused of beating his son when he was only 5 months old is now behind bars.  According to the Associated Press, Alexander Brooks, 19, is jailed on a $250,000 bond.

Authorities say the child's mother brought the baby to a St. Louis hospital for an exam last year.  That's when the investigation began. Prosecutors say investigators determined Brooks had shaken and squeezed the child.  The child is now 10 months old.

Investigators say the baby's father was living in the home but the mother did not know about the abuse.

The baby is in the care of another family member.  Brooks is charged with two counts of Aggravated Battery of a Child.   If convicted, Brooks could face up to 30 years in jail.
