EAST ST. LOUIS, IL (KTVI)-- East St. Louis is working with the state to launch an aggressive campaign to clean up the city.

East St. Louis Mayor Alvin Parks is leading a crew of volunteers collecting thousands of illegally dumped tires scattered throughout the city.

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency is helping East St. Louis remove the tires for proper disposal.

The EPA is also helping with the cost to clean up the tires and is providing contractors to haul them away.

The illegally dumped tires create homes for rodents and snakes and put the public's health at risk.

Crews have been collecting the tires for the last ten days. Some of them will be recycled into various products, others will be retreaded and reused.

And in an effort to solve the problem of illegal dumping, Mayor Parks says code enforcement officers and surveillance cameras will be watching.
