Steelman Reaches Out To Rural Voters During Tour

WRIGHT CITY, MO (KTVI)– Republican U.S. Senate hopeful Sarah Steelman kicked off a statewide tour of Missouri farms and agricultural businesses Thursday.  Her “Flatbed Forum” focuses on farm community concerns and the contributions of agriculture to the state.

Steelman stopped at a Wright City hog farm owned by David Reckamp and his family.  He raises 2000 drug-free hogs a year along with pumpkins and other vegetables.  In addition to concerns about Missouri’s current drought killing off the corn crop, Reckamp worries government is imposing too many regulations.

A former state treasurer and state senator, Steelman is fearful what she sees as growing government interference will force farm operations overseas.  She said, ” extreme animal rights organizations are teaming up with federal regulators to put family farming out of business.”

“I want to make sure there is a common sense voice in Washington fighting for family farmers,” she told Reckamp.  Steelman is running on a platform of limited government and “sound fiscal policy.”  She said if she were currently in the U.S. Senate she would have voted against the five -year farm bill unless it was rewritten.

Steelman faces  sevem opponents in the state’s August 7 primary.
