CENTRAL WEST END, ST. LOUIS. MO. (KTVI) – Around 7:20 pm the call went out for a fire in the 3900 block of Lindell.  The blaze quickly went to 5 alarms for the St. Louis Fire Department.  The apartment complex is called the 3949, an upscale complex geared to young adults, many of whom attend St. Louis University.

The complex, 3949 houses 194 units, featuring modern amenities and a restaurant on the ground floor of the apartment building.

The only injuries during the fire, were two firefighters, who were treated at the scene.  Over 160 firefighters fought the 5 alarm blaze.  Some 70 of those firefighters are from St. Louis County.

There has been some speculation that the fire started on the 4th floor of the apartment complex, but that has not been confirmed by the St. Louis Fire Department.  There was a partial collapse of the 3rd and 4th floor.

At one point, firefighters were on the 4th and 5th floor of the building attempting to rescue pets of owners, but had to abandon the building in fear of collapse.

Reporter Melanie Moon talked to some residents that lived in the building and to restaurant patrons at Dessert On The Boulevard, who were eating dinner at the time of the fire.

Here’s what they had to say…
