Bomb Scare Turns Out To Be Halloween Prop

ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI)  - There were some uneasy moments in a South City neighborhood this morning after a suspicious package was found inside a home on Oleatha near the intersection with Oak Hill.

Police say around 8:00am a real estate agent was doing a walk through in a vacant home when she found the device in the basement. She called police and the bomb and arson unit was called in. Investigators say the package looked like an explosive device but it turned out to be nothing dangerous.

Police did evacuate some nearby homes while they investigated.

"You have to treat everything as if it is real and proceed accordingly. And that`s why the precautionary evacuations and why we call out the experts to handle it," said Lieutenant Darla Gray with the St. Louis Police Department.

Police tell us the device was a toy like prop that was used as part of a Halloween costume. It was mistakenly left behind by the old tenant. No charges will be filed. 

While on the scene police did discover an unrelated natural gas leak across the street. That was quickly repaired.
