Semi Crashes Into Bus; Multiple Injuries

GRANITE CITY, IL (KTVI) - A semi tractor trailer has crashed into a Madison County transit bus around 7pm at Route 3 and Chain of Rocks Road.  Witnesses said the bus was loading and unloading passengers at a bus stop when it was rear ended by the semi truck. Seven ambulances and two helicopters were needed to assist bus passengers injured in the accident.

According to the Granite City Police department the semi tractor trailer struck the back of the bus.  The bus then hit a pick-up truck in front of the bus.  After striking the bus the semi struck two traffic lights and veered into a nearby ditch. 

The driver and five passengers of the bus were taken to Gateway Regional Medical Center.  They all suffered minor injuries.

The semi driver was taken out of the truck and was airlifted to St. Louis University Hospital for treatment.  He is listed in serious condition.
