Waterloo High School Student Dies in Crash
WATERLOO, IL (KTVI) – One student is dead and four others injured after a terrible crash late Monday night in a rural area just outside Waterloo, Illinois.
The deceased is identified as Abby Cecena, who died on Tuesday from her injuries at St. Louis Children`s Hospital.
The one-car accident happened at about 11:00 P.M. on Gall Road near GG road.
It is unclear what caused the accident, but the vehicle, a Mazda 6, went flying off the road after going over the top of a hill, rolling several times before landing upside down in a ditch.
The other students are identified as Sam Fannon, who was the driver. On Monday afternoon, he was listed at St. Louis Children`s Hospital in serious condition.
Passenger Steve Schad was released Wednesday afternoon. Passenger Cameron Rubemeyer is listed in critical condition.
Rachel Magourik was in satisfactory condition.
Magourik`s step-sister was Abby Cecena.
The five were about to begin their junior year at Waterloo High School.
Tuesday afternoon, a large prayer vigil was held for students at the Monroe County Courthouse.
Although school is still out for the summer, the students were invited back to the high school after the prayer vigil, where counselors are helping them deal with the shock of the accident.
Monroe County Sheriff Dan Kelley says the cause of the accident is still under investigation.
