CENTRAL WEST END (KTVI)-Laughter was put to good use Saturday night as the St. Louis Area Foodbank held the first of what it hopes to be an annual comedy night to raise money and awareness for the St. Louis charity.
A growing need for food in the Bi-State region keeps more than 500 food pantries and agencies busy distributing 25 million pounds of food each year. That food is collected and sorted by thousands of volunteers at the Area Foodbank before it is picked up by or delivered to the agencies spread across 26 counties in Missouri and Illinois.
The Saturday night fund raiser at The Pageant, “Hunger is No Laughing Matter,” featured Mike Birbiglia and St. Louisan Greg Warren. Both comedians have performed on the” Tom and Bob Show” and “Comedy Central.”
During the event patrons were asked to estimate how many meals could be prepared from a grocery cart full of non-perishable items. The person who came closest to the actual number was to win $250 worth of gift certificates to Shop and Save.
Hunger is not something people talk said Ryan Farmer, Communications Director for the St. Louis Area Foodbank. “It’s a very prideful issue for people to have to ask for help and we want to educate people that hunger is very real in our community and the Foodbank is here to help,” Farmer said.
Anyone who wants to organize a food drive or donate money is asked to contact the Foodbank at stlfoodbank.org.
