CREVE COEUR, MO (KTVI) - Mary Ann Dempsey says it was absolutely frightening to stand and watch as a van teetered on the edge of a raised parking lot in Creve Coeur.
An elderly couple was inside. The deputy fire marshal for the Creve Coeur Fire District says the driver mistakenly stepped on the gas pedal instead of using the brake.
"We heard a loud screeching and a bang and saw a minivan handing off the ledge," said Dempsey.
Police and firefighters helped secure the van with the couple still inside.
"They had their seatbelts on so they were kind of stable in there but they were teeter tottering along that wall for at least a half an hour," said Dempsey.
She said firefighters fastened safety harnesses around the driver and her passenger as each one was pulled to safety.
"It was a frightening situation," said Dempsey.
Deputy Fire Marshal Jerry McQueen said the driver simply made a mistake, "Instead of hitting the brake they accelerated over the sidewalk."
There was a bout a six foot drop off in front of them but the van never tipped and the couple walked away.
McQueen said at first the couple refused medical treatment but then agreed to be transported to an area hospital to be checked out.
