(KTVI)-A new culinary arts program has been started up for high school students in the Mehlville School District. The district got a Federal grant for $5,000 which allowed them to purchase an institutional freezer and along with the necessary cookware and utensils.
The Pro Start career building program developed by the National Restaurant Association is designed to help meet the demand for the projected increase of nearly 2 million jobs in the next 10 years in the hospitality industry.
Students will be introduced into the world of professional cooking including training in safety and sanitation; professionalism; food service equipment; stocks, sauces and soup; communication; management essentials; fruits and vegetable; serving customers; potatoes and grains; careers. Lab experiences will reinforce these skills.
