OLD MONROE, MO (KTVI)- A portion of Highway C at Highway 79 in Old Monroe has a new name. It has been named in honor Marine Lance Corporal Patrick W. Schimmel, who was killed in action in 2009 in Afghanistan . He was just  21. Schimmel was a graduate of Winfield High School.

A few hundred people turned out for the highway dedication in honor the soldier.   Several veteran groups raised money for the dedication.

Schimmel died from enemy fire in a battle that he wasn`t fighting.  The soldier was  2-kilometers away from his base. Is an especially cruel reminder of the cost of war.
