ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) – What started as one man punching another ended in gunfire and murder. This morning one person is dead and another is in police custody.
The shooting happened behind the St. Louis Public Schools headquarters building on Hadley very close to Convention Plaza around 11pm Wednesday.
Investigators tell us there was a conflict between the victim and the suspect earlier in the evening. Police say the victim actually punched the suspect in the face and threatened him. After that the suspect apparently got a gun. Authorities tell us the victim then indicated that he had a gun too. That`s when police say the suspect, a 58 year old man, shot the victim in the chest killing him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police have very little information about the victim, no name and no age. They tell us he was apparently a homeless man. Investigators say the suspect remained at the scene and surrendered to police- even giving them the gun.
This is second killing in the downtown area in just a little over a week. You`ll recall on Tuesday night of last week, one man stabbed another in the chest killing him after an argument over a bag of Cheetos. That happened not far from last night`s killing at Sixth and Washington. Police made a quick arrest in that case as well.
