ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) – A Missouri death row inmate took the stand Wednesday in an effort to clear his name in the murder and rape of two sisters, and told a judge how police beat a confession out of him.
But, Reggie Clemons pleaded the 5fth more than 30 times. He exercised that right each time the lawyer from the state attorney general’s office asked about details of the 1991 crime.
Clemons maintains his innocence, denying he played a role in the rape and murders of Julie and Robin Kerry.
Clemons alleges the police first slapped him a few times, then beat his head against the wall and only agreed to confess to get the beating to stop.
The state attorney also raised questions about Clemons changing his story about the beating.
After the hearing, the state supreme court will decide the outcome.
