Cards Beat Cubs 6-3, Maintain NL Wild Card Lead

The Cardinals won the decisive game of their weekend series with the Cubs in Chicago, 6-3 on Sunday. Jason Motte closed out Kyle Lohse’s career best 16th win of the season. It was also Motte’s 40th save of the year.

Rookie Pete Kozma continues to hit for the Redbirds. He smacked his 1st major league home run to give the Cards a 4-2 lead. The Cardinals got three runs in the third inning thanks to a 2 run double by Allen Craig and a run scoring single by David Freese. The Cardinals added insurance in the 8th inning, Kozma drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and Carlos Beltran added a pinch hit single to close out the six run Cardinals attack.

Lohse went six innings and allowed three runs in winning his career best 16th game of the 2012 season. The Cardinals maintained their two and a half game NL Wild card lead. The Brewers also won their game on Sunday 6-2 over the Nationals. 

The Cardinals head to Houston for a three game series beginning on Monday night. There are just nine games left in the regular season for the Cards.
