FAIRVIEW HEIGHTS, IL (KTVI) - One woman is in custody after an early morning police chase in the Metro East. It stated after investigators say the woman almost ran over an officer.

The officer who was almost hit is a Fairview Heights, Illinois cop. Fortunately, the officer is okay. The pursuit stated in Fairview Heights.  The chase ended at IL Route 157 and Route 15 in St. Clair County.

It all started earlier Sunday when Fairview Heights police tried to pull over a Pontiac Grand Prix for a traffic stop.  Investigators say police suspected drug activity after they pulled the woman over.

During the stop, authorities say she sped off and that's when she nearly hit an officer, according to investigators. Then around 1:00 a.m., Fairview Heights police apparently spotted the car again and started chasing it.

Fairview Heights pulled off the pursuit but it continued with the St. Clair County Sheriff's Department.  The chase lasted about 20 minutes and hit speeds between 75 and 80 miles per hour.

It ended when the car ran over spike sticks thrown down by Cahokia police. One woman in her 30s was taken into custody. She was the only person in the car, police said.  No one was hurt and charges could come later Monday morning.
