PACIFIC, MO (KTVI) – Extra Pacific police officers patrolled the streets Saturday morning after hearing of threats against a special-needs member of the high school`s homecoming parade.
April Aubuchon spoke a universal truth for women of all ages.
“Every girl wants to feel pretty.”
So, the owner of Kaleidoscope Consignment gave Bailey Tanner a makeover. The special-needs sophomore at Pacific High rode in the homecoming parade Saturday morning. Bailey’s dad, Ricky Lee Tanner was blown away with her new look.
“Wow,” he shook his head. “Yeah. She looked great. They did a great job with her this morning.”
After classmates elected Bailey to the homecoming court, school officials suspended several students they believed would throw eggs and quack at Bailey during the parade.
Aubuchon reminded her daughter: “Just to make sure that she watches what she says to make sure that it’s not hurtful to somebody else.”
Extra police moved in just feet from Robert Benson. He was enjoying the parade with his wife. Benson had been telling his freshman son: “Don’t mess around with kids just because they’re different. You should help them because of their differences.”
Mixed martial arts fighter and Pacific grad Justin Lawrence said his little brother Dalton Voyles offered to ride with Bailey, when others refused.
“And once I heard that, it melted my heart.” I said, “You know what? That’s a good man right there,” Lawrence beamed with pride. “If any boy is to walk with her and keep her safe, it’s you buddy. I’ll tell you that.”
After all, Voyles is a wrestler and football player. Bailey’s mom, Tonya, called him a good kid.
“It doesn’t hurt that Dalton’s a football player. Never hurts.”
As the parade continued up Union Street, the girls remembered that they should be treated like ladies, boys should act like gentlemen, and the town of Pacific will support them.
“The good outweighs the bad,” Tonya pointed out. “And there’s a lot of good people here supporting our daughter and that’s the most important thing.”
