Texas Mom Dresses As Daughter To Catch Predator
HARLINGEN, TX (CNN) — A middle school teacher and suspected child predator is in jail after a Texas mother pretended to be her daughter when she noticed a suspicious person reaching out to her daughter on Facebook.
The Harlingen mother, who is not being publicly identified in an effort to protect her 12-year-old daughter, was searching from her daughter’s friend requests last week when she stumbled upon one from a profile with no photo claiming to be a 20-year-old student named Freddy Love.
The daughter told her mother that the man had been trying to contact and friend request her.
From her daughter’s profile, the mother messaged the man, asking how he knew her. The man replied, saying he didn’t know her, but wanted to get to know her.
“He could have withdrawn from the situation many times,” the mom said. “I gave him many chances to withdraw or to let him know that I was 12 and that my mom was asleep, and basically that he knew it was wrong.”
The woman says things quickly became intense.
“He was being very explicit about what he wanted done, which is (EXPLETIVE) and the positions, and things that a 12 year old has no knowledge of,” she said. “After he asked me to sneak out, thinking that I was my daughter, that’s when I said, ‘I’m going to call the police and let them know.’”
The mother reportedly set up a meeting with the man and disguised herself as her daughter using a wig, hoodie and sneakers.
“I was going to walk to Walmart, to pick me up at Walmart, to let me know what he was driving,” she said. “He described a four-door Ford car — right by where you pump the gas — and he parked like two feet away from me. He told me that he was Freddie, not to be scared, to get in the car.”
Police, who were watching from nearby, reportedly stepped in when the mother opened the car door. “Freddy” turned out to be Alfredo Hernandez, 29, a middle school teacher in San Benito. The suspect has been charged with soliciting a minor.
The school district told CNN Hernandez has resigned from his teaching position.
