(KTVI) – A local waste and recycling company is doing its part to lessen the environmental impact of its service fleet.  Republic Services is investing $25 million dollars for 72 compressed natural gas trucks.

Compressed natural gas is a more sustainable fuel source than diesel and reduces carbon emissions by up to 23 percent.

The new trucks are also 80 to 90 percent quieter than similar diesel vehicles.

Republic serves over 200,000 households and 27,000 businesses in the St. Louis region.
