Man Kills Wife, Himself in Thanksgiving Murder-Suicide
EAST ST. LOUIS, IL (KTVI) – It was a deadly Thanksgiving for one East St. Louis family. According to police, a man shot and killed his wife, shot his daughter in the leg, and then shot and killed himself. It all took happened around 6:00pm Thursday, at a home in the 800 block of 75th Street, off State Street.
When police arrived at the scene, a 44 year-old woman had run out of the house, claiming she was shot at least twice in the leg by her father.
She told police that before she was shot, her father, Bobby G. Stewart, 69, shot her mother, Dorothy C. McCaskill, 66, who was left laying on the living room floor when her daughter ran out to call for help.
Stewart was found in a second floor bedroom dead from an apparent self inflicted shotgun wound to the head. He and McCaskill, his wife, were estranged.
Illinois State Police Captain Jim Morrisey explains, “The State Police SWAT Team made entry to locate the victim that had been shot and was still inside the residence, to check on her well-being. SWAT Team made entry, retrieved that victim, unfortunately she was deceased. Once officers made entry, they used a robot to check the rest of the residence, where we located a male subject, a 69 year-old male, in an upstairs bedroom, and he also had an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.”
Police say all three victims lived in that home, and no one else was there when all of this took place.
The daughter who survived is in stable condition, recovering in a local hospital.
Police are still working to figure out a motive in this tragedy. Autopsies are scheduled on the deceased.
