BUNKER, MO (KTVI) – Two young children lost their lives in a house fire Saturday morning in Bunker, Missouri. Police say the fire happened at a home off Highway 72. Bunker is two and a half hours southwest of St. Louis.
Six people were in the home at the time of the fire. A mother got herself and her three children out safely, but two brothers who were visiting, a two year old and a three month old, died in the fire. According to the Reynolds County Sheriff, the mother of the two deceased children had left them in the care of the other woman.
Sheriff Tom Volner said, “She had left the chilren in custody of another adult. Sort of like a sleepover.”
The sheriff says the fire’s survivors were in a back bedroom of the house. The two victims were in a front room. A neighbor who was one of the first to arrive on the scene says he tried to rescue the two kids but the fire was just to intense.
Sheriff Volner, “I been at this a lone time. A three month old and two year old is hard…especially at this time of your coming up on the Christmas season and everything else too.”
The State Fire Marshall is trying to determine what caused the fire.
