Pictures – The Effects Of Low Water On The Mississippi

ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) The Coast Guard has released more images of the effects of low water on the Mississippi. The photos were taken on December 12th by Lieutenant Colby Buchanan during an air patrol over the area.

A large 2 propeller Towboat is getting ready to transit downriver with a full load. South of St. Louis Tow Vessels can move more than 20 barges at a time.

Just South of St. Louis is one of the busiest fleeting areas on the Mississippi River. Barges are stored, loaded, and unloaded at these locations. As the river levels drop, the banks of the river move in forcing these areas closer to the channel.

A view looking North into St. Louis Harbor. Fleeting Areas dot the shoreline as Towboats and barges pass in between them. St. Louis, America's 24th busiest port, plays in instrumental role in the transportation of bulk commodities. The Mississippi river transports 22% of America's Petro Products and 60% of America's Agricultural Exports.
