CHESTER, IL (KTVI)-- The bodies of Sheri, Gavin and Garret Coleman have been dug from their grave site. They're now on a truck and about to head to Chicago. Chris Hayes was the only reporter in Chester, Illinois as the story unfolded.
The former grave site in Chester looks almost the same, except for freshly dug dirt. Sheri and her boys were recently dug up and put on a truck to Chicago, Sheri's hometown. Sheri's family has been fighting for this moment for months.
You may remember convicted killer, Christopher Coleman, standing over the site in 2009. The father/husband had not been arrested yet. He wiped his eye while Major Case Squad investigators watched. Coleman stood with his parents Connie and Rev. Ron Coleman, who still live in the southern Illinois town. We later heard evidence that Chris Coleman was texting his mistress during this time. Two years later, a jury convicted him of strangling his wife and kids to be with that mistress.
Yet the bodies remained buried in Chester. Chris' family fought to keep them in their hometown, until months of court battling convinced a judge that a convicted murderer should not be able to keep control of his victims. The convicted murderer's parents fought hard to keep them in Chester, because they said they had an equal right to be near their grandkids.
Evergreen Cemetery in Chester will drive Sheri, Gavin and Garret to Chicago the morning of December 19th. The bodies are expected to arrive home just after noon. The gravestone, marking Sheri and her boys, will remain because it was paid for by Reverend Ron and Connie Coleman.
