Two Subway Stores Hit by Smash & Grab Thieves

UNIVERSITY CITY, MO (KTVI) –  Police are investigating a pair of smash-and-grab burglaries at two Subway Restaurants overnight.

The first was in University City.  Managers at the sandwich shop on Olive Boulevard near North and South Road say surveillance video shows a person looking through the front windows and door of the shop.  That person walks away, comes back, and throws what workers say was a small metal drain cover through the glass in the front door.  The suspect walks away and comes back and heads straight behind the counter.  They grab a box with at least a few hundred dollars in reserve cash and head out the door.

Watch the Surveillance Video:

Managers say the time stamp on the video is 12:30 Tuesday morning.  But, employees say an operator with the alarm company securing the store did not call police until 1:30 a.m.  So, University City Police found only glass all over the front entrance to the Subway and no suspect.

While police were still investigating in U. City, Olivette officers rushed to the Subway on Olive Boulevard and Olivaire Lane. Police found the same scene: a broken front door and no suspect.

University City Store managers say they have had a tough year.  They remember someone smashing the large front windows about a year ago.  Nothing was stolen in that crime.  A few months ago, workers survived an armed robbery.  Managers say they plan to contact the owner of the strip mall that houses the Subway.  Workers say the lights in the parking lot rarely work and there are not enough police patrols in this area.  They say this invites criminals to the store.
