How A Family Hike Turned Deadly

REYNOLDS COUNTY, MO (KTVI)– The Decareaux family was taking a weekend getaway, staying at the Brushy Creek Lodge in Reynolds County last weekend.

David Decareaux took two of his sons, 10-year-old Dominic and 8-year-old Grant, for a hike Saturday morning. But a beautiful morning turned into a cold afternoon with heavy rain and sleet.

The Beckers, owners of the lodge, organized a search party the same as they do several times a year to find lost hikers in this rugged area. They looked all Saturday night, hampered by sleet and flooded roads.

The search resumed Sunday morning and ended when the three bodies were discovered, dead from exposure.

The Beckers say there are lessons here for anyone exploring the woods. Number one, always carry emergency equipment with you. Number two, if you`re lost and come to a road, stop and stay there.

Emergency responders in Reynolds County are set to hold a series of meetings to see how they could possibly improve their emergency response.
