Circuit Attorney Officially Dismisses Case Against George Allen
ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) - Cole County Judge Daniel Green overturned the capital murder, rape, sodomy and first degree burglary charges against 56-year old George Allen Jr. on November 2, 2012.
He determined evidence beneficial to him was withheld. Allen was convicted of the 1982 rape and murder of Mary Bell, whose body was found inside her LaSalle Park home.
Now St. Louis Circuit Attorney Jennifer Joyce is dismissing the case against Allen. In a blog posted on Friday she said, “Today we officially dismissed our case against George Allen for the murder of Mary Bell. Whether one believes George Allen is innocent or guilty of this crime, there can be no doubt that the justice system has completely failed both Mary Bell and George Allen.

The concerns raised last fall by Cole County Circuit Judge Daniel Green involved actions on the part of the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department (SLMPD) 30 years ago. Specifically, Judge Green was alarmed by the fact that there was important evidence that was never turned over to prosecutors, and therefore, was never provided to Mr. Allen’s defense counsel for trial. Regardless of the reason why police didn’t disclose all information to prosecutors, it’s still wrong.
Personally, I share Judge Green’s concerns, and I am committed to finding a permanent solution to ensure that the mistakes made in the George Allen case do not happen again.”
