EAST ST. LOUIS, IL. (KTVI) – The Continuum of Life Care Center in East St. Louis is now open as a warming station. More than a dozen men and women spent Sunday night at the center to avoid the bitter cold weather.
One of those men is Ronald Johnson. He says he sleeps in a tent in the woods.
"You have to bundle up with plenty of clothes and layers," said Johnson.
Brandon Coleman is without a home but spent Sunday and Monday inside the warm center.
"The most frustrating thing about the cold is you can't do anything about it," said Coleman.
Tenille Traylor is the program director of the center and shows us the kitchen area where they had hot dogs, chili and hot chocolate.
"We have cots lined up for anyone who wants to come and just come in from the cold," said Traylor.
She says the center will remain an overnight warming center for as long as the cold weather remains.
"We know there are people out here who are in dire straits and don't know where to go when it's cold," said Traylor. "So we're just here to lend a helping hand."
The center also takes food and clothes to those who refuse to come in from the cold.
The center is located at 1274 N. 37th Street in East St. Louis, IL. The phone number is 618-271-2522.
