Stan Musial To Be Laid To Rest Saturday

ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI)– St. Louis prepares to say goodbye one last time to Stan Musial. His funeral mass will be celebrated at the Cathedral Basillica Saturday morning.

We know Stan Musial was a very humble man but Saturday’s funeral mass will be celebrated on a large scale.

After all, Stan musial, like his famous statue, was a man who seemed larger than life.

Panus Angelicus is one of several songs chosen by the Musial family to insure Saturday’s funeral mass is both solemn and uplifting.

Many of the selections will feature the angelic voices of the archdiocesan children`s choir and while its 35 members are too young to have known Stan well, they are old enough to appreciate his legacy.

The archdiocese is working hard to make sure the cathedral is at its magnificent best for the family, the fans, and the thousands expected to watch the mass on television.

Among the featured speakers will be two readings by members of the Musial family.

And for many in attendance, they should sound familiar because they are the exact same readings offered nine months ago at the funeral mass for Lil Musial.

Preparing for a funeral of this magnitude requires a great deal of work in very little time, but the archdiocese does it with great joy because here Stan The Man is also celebrated as Stan the Catholic man.

Saturday’s funeral mass was initially going to be by invitation only, but the Cardinals tell us the Musial family wants to accommodate Stan’s fans as best they can, so some will likely be allowed inside once the invited guests are seated.

At Lambert Airport friends and admirers were trickling in for the service.  Late Friday, current Cincinnati Reds and former Cardinal General Manager Walt Jocketty arrived, thinking about Musial both on and off the field.

“For a man, a hall of famer, as great as he was he was one of the most humble guys I ever met,” the long time baseball executive said, “and you look at the numbers he put up as a player it’s just phenomenal.  I enjoyed my time here with him and it’s important I come here and honor his life.”

Jocketty says Musial was the kind of guy you couldn’t help but learn from.

“I think the one thing he taught was for people to be themselves and to be humble, and no matter where you are in life, you have to treat people right, and treat people well, and he was that type of person,” he said.

From here, the funeral procession will make its way through the city passing Busch Stadium on the way to the burial service.

Crowds are expected outside Busch Stadium Saturday to help show the love this city had for baseball’s perfect knight.

The Stan The Man statue will be the end of the funeral procession.

Family members will lay a wreath Stan’s honor.

Since his passing, fans have been leaving mementos at the foot of the statue outside of Busch Stadium

The wreath laying is planned for noon Saturday at the foot of the Stan The Man statue.

The cardinals ask fans arrive no later than 12:30.
