NEW MELLE, MO. (KTVI) - New Melle residents gathered Monday at a meeting to discuss safety issues at the local gun shop.
The shop is considering adding a gun range.
However, safety at the shop needs to be improved, according to a safety assessment the city had prepared.
The shop already holds concealed carry classes, so guns are fired there several days a week.
"It is so loud, and it makes you feel unsafe," resident Johnny Bridges said. "I am really concerned about safety."
Despite the result of the assessment, the gun shop can continue the concealed carry classes.
The chairman of the New Melle zoning and planning commission said the classes will continue because of a "deal" the previous administration made with the gun shop.
"It's disappointing that it will continue with the report saying it isn't safe," Bridges said. "We just hope it gets to where it's safe."
At this point, the gun shop has not applied for a permit to add a shooting range. However, the owner has discussed it with city officials.
During Monday's meeting, the gun shop's owner told residents safety is his number one concern.
