Downtown I-64/40 Closure This Weekend

(KTVI) – MoDOT is planning to close a stretch of Interstate 64/Highway 40 through St. Louis city this weekend.

The closure was supposed to happen last weekend but rain prevented that from taking place.

The closure is scheduled so MoDOT can demolish two bridges which will be rebuilt.

One of those bridges is on Newstead Avenue; the other is nearby on Taylor Avenue.

Both bridges are more than 50 years old and need to be rebuilt.

I-64/40 is going to be completely shut down between Hampton and Forest Park Avenue. The closure will start Friday at 8:00pm and the highway will reopen by 3:00am Monday.

The demolition this weekend is part of a year and a half long project that will see a total of four bridges in this area demolished and rebuilt, some of the highway resurfaced and a roundabout added.

This is one of three complete weekend closures of I-64/40 for the project over the next year or so.

There is a Lady Gaga concert downtown over the weekend some Mardi Gras events in Soulard, including the Pet Parade.

MoDOT and Mardi Gras organizers are encouraging people to think about alternate routes to the highway.

When the interstate reopens Monday morning, it will be re-striped with three lanes in each direction in this area. The lanes will be narrower than what you drivers are used to and will stay that way for a while.

The rain last weekend prevented the restriping. That’s why the closure didn’t happen then.

As long as the weather stays above freezing on Sunday, the re-striping can take place and the closure will happen.

Right now MoDOT feels confident the weather will cooperate.

The new rebuilt bridges are set to reopen by November.
