(KTVI) – Former Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul caused controversy over the murder of former Navy SEAL Chris Kyle Saturday.

Kyle, 38, was shot and killed in a Texas firing range. Police arrested Eddie Ray Routh, 25. Police say Routh may have had mental illness related to his military service.

Paul later tweeted, “Chris Kyle’s death seems to confirm that ‘he who lives by the sword dies by the sword.’ Treating PTSD at a firing range doesn’t make sense.”

Some of the reactions online included user Razer saying, ““So all veterans, once done serving our nation with honor, deserve to be murdered as civilians? Wow.”

Kyle claimed he is the most lethal sniper in history with a record of 160 kills. He enlisted in the Navy in 1999 and was discharged Nov. 2009. He served four tours of duty in Iraq and received 14 awards and decorations for his service, including two Silver Stars.
