ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) – A handgun has been found at Jefferson Elementary School in North St. Louis on Wednesday. A 13 year old 6th grade student brought the gun to the school. School administration officials found the gun and handed it over to the police. They determined that the gun was not loaded.
At this point authorities do not know if there was an intent to use the gun. Police are still investigating this situation. More details will be posted as this story develops.
This letter was sent to parents at Jefferson Elementary School:
An incident occurred today at Jefferson Elementary School that I believe needs to be brought to your attention. It was brought to my attention that a student at our school brought a weapon into the building. The weapon was confiscated by the school and the District is handling this matter in accordance with State law and District policies regarding weapons.
Please be assured that the District will continue to review its safety policies and procedures to ensure that we are maintaining a safe and secure learning environment. In light of the recent tragedy in Connecticut, this incident may cause your child to have some safety concerns. I encourage you to talk with your child about any fears he or she may have and assure your child that the staff at Jefferson Elementary School is committed to making our school a safe and caring place to learn.
Furthermore, I will use this incident as a teachable moment and share with all Jefferson Elementary Students that Saint Louis Public Schools has a zero-tolerance regarding weapons of any kind.
