Lafayette High School alum Tyler Griffey’s basket with 0.9 seconds remaining lifted the Illini to a 74-72 upset win over #1 Indiana on Thursday night in Champaign, IL. Illinois trailed by as many as 16 points in the second half, but staged a huge rally. Senior guard D.J. Richardson’s three pointer tied the game at 70 in the final minute of the game. Illinois had the ball on their own baseline with 0.9 seconds to go when Brandon Paul in bounded the ball to a hustling Tyler Griffey cutting to the basket. Griffey laid it in and Illinois had the upset of the top ranked Hooisers.
The win improves Illinois’ record to 16-8 on the season and 3-7 in the Big Ten Conference. Indiana falls to 20-3 and 8-2 in the Big Ten, Richardson led the Illini in scoring with 23 points, Paul had 21, while Griffey scored 14 points.
