ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI)– Residents in the quiet Carondelet Neighborhood told Fox 2 it has turned into a “playground for prostitutes.”
“You can see the women getting in and out of cars with guys all the time,” Carondelet business owner Jaymes Dearing said. “It just isn’t fun to own a business where people know there are prostitutes.”
Tom Villa is an alderman in the area.
“The right word for the prostitution activity is rampant,” he said.
“It really hurts the area.”
Alderman Villa said he would like police to do more to stop the prostitution.
“We passed three new ordinances in Dec. that give them more power to police this,” he said. “It does not appear that they are using them.”
“They do a crackdown, but then they girls return,” he said.
Police said they “just” started to implement the new ordinances in late Jan., so it will take a while to see results.
They also said that they made 36 prostitution related arrests in the last 70 days in the neighborhood.
Chief Sam Dotson is also planning to start a “sustained” crackdown on prostitution in March.
“I hope they leave this area,” Alderman Villa said.
