BRENTWOOD, MO (KTVI) – A Missouri American Water employee was hit by a minivan while working in Brentwood early Friday morning.

Spokeswoman Ann Dettmer got the chilling call in the middle of the night.  She heard two employees were starting repairs on a broken water main on Manchester Road near Brentwood Boulevard.  She said one of the men was turning off a water valve when he was hit.  She was happy to hear what the coworker did next, but she was not surprised.

‘Getting help to the scene right away and standing by his coworker until help arrived,’ Dettmer explained.  ‘That`s our culture.  We take care of each other.’

The driver reportedly stayed at the scene and spoke with Brentwood Police.  Officers shut down part of the intersection during the investigation.  During all of this, paramedics rushed the victim a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.  Still, this was a tough night for his fellow employees.

‘We are so much a family in this company.  Our employees tend to come to this company and stay for a long time,’ Dettmer said.  ‘It`s always hard on us, but we`re so relieved that he is okay.  We`ll be providing a lot of support to the family, because that`s kind of our tradition.’

Part of that support is maintaining the family`s wish for privacy.  Dettmer said the victim`s family did not want the company to release his name.

Brentwood Police continued to look into exactly how all of this happened.  But, Dettmer offered a reminder on behalf of all men and women who work in traffic.

“Whether they’re [Missouri Department of Transportation] workers, County workers, Missouri American Water workers, other utility workers, this is such good reminder for people to just be very vigilant when out on the roads.  And, be paying attention when you see construction work going on in an area to make sure that everybody stays safe.”
