BARNHART, MO (KTVI) -- A mother and daughter had to be rescued after their car went off the road and into a Jefferson County creek Tuesday morning.
According to the Rock Community Fire Protection District and Missouri Highway Patrol, a 40-year-old woman was driving her minivan on Highway M between I-55 and 61/67 around 7:30 a.m. Tuesday. She had her 4-year-old daughter inside when they somehow went over the guardrails, flipped and rolled 40 feet down into an embankment.
A highway patrol trooper was the first on the scene and pulled the 4-year-old to safety but he couldn't get out so firefighters formed a human chain to help get the trooper, woman and child out of the water.
The mother and her daughter were taken to St. Anthony's Medical Center where they were both treated and released.
Officials say the seatbelts played a big role in saving their lives. Police are still investigating why the car went off the road.
