CHESTERFIELD, MO (KTVI)– Could St. Louis, specifically Chesterfield, become a shopping destination for regional tourists?
The sounds of construction work moving at a rapid pace to insure two sprawling outlet malls in Chesterfield will be ready for business by August.
Taubman Prestige Outlets Chesterfield stretches along the Missouri River levee visible on the north side of Interstate 64.
On the south side of the interstate, competitor St. Louis Premium Outlets sits on ground raised above the flood plain.
At one point it was touted as the battle of the outlet malls, even some at Chesterfield City Hall expected one developer would back out.
But stores are already seeking permits. Gap, Banana Republic, and retailer “2B” will occupy space at Taubman.
Kitchen Collection and Nike are the first of at least 56 retailers, including Saks 5th Avenue Off 5fth, to secure permits at St. Louis premium.
Both firms are counting on the fact St. Louis is the only metropolitan area of its size without outlet mall shopping.

The Taubman mall is planning to wait until spring to announce most of its retailers.
