(KTVI) – A newly discovered moon now has a new name and it might have Star Trek fans to thank.
After a small moon orbiting Pluto was discovered in 2011, a naming contest was created to allow voters to decide it’s name. Thousands of Star Trek fans answered back naming the moon “Vulcan” after the fictional alien species and it’s home planet.
Vulcans were made popular by the 1960s TV show and its spinoffs. The first appearance of a Vulcan was portrayed by Leonard Nimoy as Spock.
Vulcan came in first with nearly 174,000 votes, as Star Trek actor William Shatner announced on his twitter.
Cerebus, the mythical guard of Hell, came in second place with nearly 100,000 votes.
