Belleville Man Killed In Single Car Accident

BELLEVILLE, IL (KTVI)– A Belleville man is dead after a single car accident in unincorporated Belleville.

This happened around 7:21 p.m. Sunday in the 2300 block of IMBS Station Road.

The driver of a 1999 Oldsmobile told police he was traveling southwest on IMBS Station Road when the rear of the vehicle began to hydroplane on the wet roadway. He stated he tried to gain control of the vehicle, but went into the ditch and struck a culvert causing the vehicle to overturn.

A passenger was trapped inside the vehicle and had to be extricated by the Columbia Fire Department personnel.  The passenger was identified as 24-year-old David L. K. Douthitt.

Douthitt was unresponsive and was treated on scene by Columbia EMS personnel.  At 8:40 p.m. Deputy Coroner Dean Darnall pronounced Douthitt deceased.

The driver was transported by ambulance to St. Anthony’s Hospital in St. Louis for treatment of his injuries.

The Sheriff’s Department is still investigating the cause of the accident.
