(KTVI) – According to an article released in Nature Geoscience on March 17, the pressure drops experienced during an earthquake can cause the formation of gold. For years the relationship between pressure fluctuations and minerals has been unknown.

A recent study discovered cavity expansion during an earthquake causes extreme pressure drops. Those pressure drops cause the water trapped in the cavity to flash vaporize and produce gold-enriched quartz veins in the cavity.

Multiple earthquakes can create economic-grade gold deposits.
