ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) – The Coast Guard has just released images of the barge break-away on Sunday. They say that a total of 114 barges broke loose from the Port of St. Louis. Ten barges sank. The accident also shut down the Jefferson Barracks Bridge for a short time.

The barges were parked in groups. One broke loose it bumped into another barge knocking it loose. Those barges knocked into other barges creating a domino effect.

Barges were scattered up and down the river, as far south as the Meramec River. The Mississippi River is running high and fast which allowed the barges to travel quickly downstream.

These photos were taken by Petty Officer Third Class Brett Reel during a patrol over the Mississippi on Sunday.
