FENTON, MO. (KTVI) - Meghan Herndon was a popular and talented soccer star at Rockwood Summit High School. The 21-year -old known for her spunk and fiery red hair lost her life after a tragic scooter accident in Cape Girardeau last fall.
Herndon was a senior soccer player and nursing student at Southeast Missouri State. She wasn't wearing a helmet during the accident and died from her injuries. The Fenton community is kept her memory alive through a fitting tribute soccer game at Rockwood Summit. Family members say they are overwhelmed by the support. Meghan`s kidneys, liver and tissue were donated to families in St. Louis. Parents Ian Herndon and Cindi Silvey say the support from the community has been amazing.
'We just don`t want anyone to forget her we have a scholarship that we are hoping to endow at SEMO in her name and that will help with her legacy.' Said Herndon
'She was one of those kids who was a tough competitor on and off the field but had a heart of gold. We are grateful and thankful. If anyone could learn something from Meghan it`s just how to give.' Said Silvey
Last year the Cape Girardeau City Council passed a helmet law in Meghan`s honor. The Cardinals are also helping to raise $10,000 in scholarship money with ticket sales. The Cardinals vs. Phillies game is set for July 23rd which would`ve been Meghan`s 22nd birthday.
