EAST ST. LOUIS, IL. (KTVI) - The You Paid For It Team investigates the crisis in East St Louis.  The city is looking at possibly slashing the Fire Department from 58 Firefighters down to 37.

A grant has run out and the city isn't sure it can get it renewed.

Investigator Elliott Davis wanted to know why, with the city budget so tight, The Mayor is being paid so much.

He's making $50,000 a year even though it's a part time job and a symbolic post.

The City Manager wields the real power in the city. You pay City Manager Deletra Hudson $90,000 a year to run the day to day operations in this impoverished city.

The Mayor makes a lot more money than those in surrounding cities that are financially a lot better off.

The median income in East St Louis is just $19,000 a year

42 percent of the people live below the poverty line.

Mayor Parks says he gave back 2 years ago by giving up his $9,600 a year expense account. He says there's no need to slash is salary despite the issues facing the town like those in the Fire Department.
